The domestic dog is a desendant from wolves, following domestication and selective breeding by humans over millenia. Specifically, it is believed to be descended from the grey wolf, with no evidence of other species within its genome. Dogs are the most widely distributed carnivore on earth.

Dogs show the greatest level of variance of body size within any species, as a result of the selective breeding of sub species by humans. The genetics coding for such incredible size differences are being studied, and insulin like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) is proposed as a major component.
